A.C.O.R.N.S.

ACORNS is a non-profit service and support organization for the parks owned and managed by Genesee County, New York. Its mission is to generate and create additional resources and support for, and in the best interest of, the conservation, environmental stewardship and promotion of the Genesee County parks through events and activities, including but not necessarily limited to the following: work projects, programs, special events, outreach programs, exhibits, interpretive programs, fundraising activities and events, guided tours, and additional activities or events which are designed to meet the needs of the Genesee County parks.

Batavia Area Jaycees

Jaycees is an international community service organization for people between the ages of 21 and 39. The Batavia Area Jaycees have offered leadership training through community development projects since 1934. Our chapter is known for running an annual home show in March and a 5k run on Labor Day. In the past we were responsible for the creation of GCC and Genesee County Park. We continue to display American flags on Main Street on major national holidays, run a food stand at Go-Art’s Picnic in the Park, hold a lighting contest during the holidays and sponsor several youth sports teams. It is always a fun time whenever Jaycees get together. Our meetings are held the first Thursday of every month at our own Jaycee Hall above the House of K on Jackson Street.

Batavia Muckdogs

Minor league baseball has been part of Batavia’s local color since 1939 when the deal creating the original PONY League was penned in Batavia at the Hotel Richmond. Since that time, there have been various “parent” clubs; currently, the Batavia franchise is part of the St. Louis Cardinals baseball family. Though a number of team names have been associated with Batavia over the years, the “MUCKDOGS” have graced the field since 1998, their logo becoming one of the top ten minor league designs in the nation.

Batavia Photography Club

The Batavia Photography Club was founded in 1987 by Jim Dusen. It was formed to share and promote photography in and around Genesee County, to enjoy, master and improve the art of photography through cooperative sharing along with good fellowship.

Meetings are open to the public and are on the second and fourth Monday of the month at 7:00 p.m. at the Northgate Free Methodist Church, Bank Street, Batavia.

Batavia Players, Inc.

Batavia Players, Inc. is a community theatre group established March 16,1932. our current membership is 126 individuals and families. The vision of Batavia Players is to enrich the Genesee County community by promoting opportunities for cultural and educational experiences in theatre arts.

Dick Mortellaro’s Corner Vacuum Shop

Dick opened his Shop in 1972, we service and sell household vacuums, including: Simiplicity, Oreck, Sebo, Fuller Brush, Sanitaire, and recently adding the Dyson line. We are a factory trained and warranty station for all of these brands. We have thousands of parts and service for many other models: Kirby, Eureka, Pansonic, etc. In 2005, we added Thomas the Train wooden and Take along, the biggest selection in Batavia and a great savings of 25%-40% off. We also have Playtown, Whittle Wooden trains (made in the USA), Thomas tee-shirts, Hats and Wooden tracks and many other items. Stop and see our big train running in the ceiling, and check out the Thomas mural on the side of the store.

Friends of the Richmond Memorial Library

The Friends of the Richmond Memorial Library raise funds to support the work of the library. Annually, we finance the Summer Reading Club for adults and children, Santa Story Hour, Books Sandwiched In and Music Sandwiched In, and all other programming that the library staff plans. New members are always welcome.

Genesee Area Genealogists

A social organization of people from Genesee and Wyoming Counties as well as around the world who are interested in genealogy and family history.

Genesee County Agriculture Society

The Genesee County Agriculture Society is a non-profit organization, made up of farmers, businesses, and concerned citizens, dedicated to preserving and promoting agriculture in an effort to enhance the quality of life in the community. The Agriculture Society is responsible for organizing a successful annual County Fair, promoting agricultural education and overseeing the maintenance and utilization of the Genesee County Fairgrounds.

Genesee County Americorps

Americorps is a national service program. Members complete community service projects in exchange for a modest living allowance and an educational award to help finance their college education. Genesee County Americorps place members at a variety of host site agencies in our area.

Genesee County ARC

Genesee County Chapter NYSARC, Inc. is an organization of Parents and Friends committed to helping Individuals with Disabilities achieve their fullest potential. We have a variety of vocational, day and residential programs and also provide case management, counseling, community services, transportation, advocacy and family support. We are here to help!

Genesee County Mental Health Association

The Mental Health Association, Inc. is a non-profit, tax exempt organization, dedicated to promoting mental wellness, improving quality of life, and instilling hope in Genesee County. Genesee County Right to Life

Genesee County Right To Life is a 30-year-old volunteer organization whose members are of all ages and many walks of life. Genesee County-wide SADD

Genesee County-wide SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) us an organization dedicated to stopping alcohol and substance abuse in our county. There are eight school districts and one private school in Genesee County. Two student representatives from each school come together to participate in monthly meetings and to plan alcohol and drug free events in the county. This program is supported by Genesee County STOP-DWI and run by the County Youth Bureau.

Genesee Green Thumb Junior Master Gardeners

We’re a county wide 4-H Club involved with learning about all aspects of gardening from our Master Gardener leaders. If you are between ages 8-18 and want to learn about flowers, vegetables, herbs, soils, weeds and insects or just want to join us for the fun, contact Cornell Cooperative Extension of Genesee County at 343-3040.

Genesee Orleans Council on Alcoholism and Substance Abuse

GCASA provides treatment, residential, EAP and prevention programs. Its service area encompasses Genesee and Orleans Counties with office located in Albion, Batavia, Holley, Indian Falls, LeRoy, and Medina. The mission of GCASA is to improve community health, reduce stigma towards people with substance abuse disorders and work across systems to produce positive community change.

Genesee Valley BOCES - Ms. Fox’s Class

The students in Ms. Fox’s class at Genesee Valley BOCES are, again this year, using a classic story as inspiration for their Christmas tree entry. Since the theme for this year’s event is “The North Pole at the Holland Land Office”, the students chose “The Polar Express” by Chris Van Allsburg. Using the story as a beginning, the students designed ornaments to describe “THEIR OWN, IMAGINARY TRAIN RIDE TO THE NORTH POLE”. So hop on board and enjoy the ride.

Ms. Fox’s class at the Genesee Valley BOCES is comprised of 5 middle/high school students who display a variety of educational, physical and emotional needs as well as high levels of energy, motivation, creativity and enthusiasm.

Girl Scouts of Big Bend Service Unit

We are proud to announce that we are celebrating 95 years of Girl Scouting in the United States. Four and five year old girls start as Daisys. They advance into Brownies (1st – 3rd grade) and then to Juniors (4th – 6th grade.) Next is Cadets, which range from 7th – 9th grade. The final level is Seniors (grade10 – 12.) The girls earn many badges, complete community service and work at learning to be leaders for the future. We are proud to serve Batavia.
GLOW Region Solid Waste Management Committee

In keeping with the theme, the GLOW tree features environmentally friendly gifts and ideas. Among the items on and around the tree are Polar Fleece garments, wind up radios and flashlights, birdfeeders and seed, canvas bag and other items. Larger items and ideas are represented by pictures and index cards.

Guiding Eyes for the Blind ~ Genesee Puppy Raising Region:

Guiding Eyes for the Blind is a non profit organization, founded in 1954, with the simple commitment of offering visually impaired individuals a new sense of independence and dignity with assistance of professionally trained guide dogs. The Genesee Region invites interested individuals and families to contact us regarding the local guide dog puppy raising program.

Holland Land Office Museum Quilt Guild

The Museum Quilt Guild meets on the third Saturday of the month at the VA, where we enjoy show and tell, educational programs and exchange ideas. We also have an active community service program and have a quilt show every other year. we welcome new members.

Holland Land Office Museum’s Volunteers

Volunteer’s love history and this tree will enlighten the viewer. “The Great Tree of Peace” symbolizes the 6 Indian Nations as depicted in the 6 strong roots. The Seneca male is depicted on the tree top. The Huron was known as the Peacemaker. Hiawatha, an Onondaga leader, convinced the nation’s leaders to work toward peace. An Eagle flies over the tree.

Kiwanis Club of Batavia

Since 1923, the Kiwanis Club of Batavia has been serving the people of Genesee County and beyond. They have sponsored local youth sports teams, given away 1000s of toys to underprivileged children during the holiday season through the Toys for Tots program and have built two parks, Kiwanis Park in the Town of Batavia and Kiwanis Memorial Park in downtown Batavia. Literacy Volunteers-Genesee / Orleans

Our young teen volunteers from our local Sertoma Serteen group designed books and scrabble ornaments to depict the colorful and fun side of reading. Our scrabble tournament is held each year in May. Literacy Volunteers is an actual adult education program dedicated to improve the lives of its clients by increasing literacy skills.

Planned Parenthood

In 1978, Planned Parenthood opened its doors in Genesee County. The clinic was located at 432 East Main Street. In 1979, Planned Parenthood offered clinical services to residents of Genesee County. These services included pregnancy testing, annual exams, and methods of contraception. Planned Parenthood also had a local Board of Directors (all residents of Genesee County). Twenty-five years later, Planned Parenthood continues to provide these services and much more.

Rainbow Preschool

Rainbow Preschool provides educational and supportive services for children with disabilities, age birth to five, and their families. The Salvation Army

The Salvation Army Center for Worship and Service, located at 529 East Main Street, Batavia, has been serving God and mankind in Genesee County since 1886. We provide year round programs of Christian worship and witness, community center and emergency relief.

Sacred Heart Religious Education

The Sunday morning religious education program held at Sacred Heart Church, Batavia NY, encompasses students from many catholic churches in the area. This year the students have decided to help Mrs. Claus bake gingerbread people for Santa to bring from the North Pole to all the good little boys and girls on Christmas Eve.

Founded in 1991, the TVCC is a group of about 50 members who enjoy collecting antiques and collectables for fun, education and the exchange of ideas.
