Mr. Mahaney was born in 1910 in Batavia. He attended St. Joseph's and graduated from Batavia High School in 1929. He worked at F.E. Mason & Sons for 45 years and was the plant supervisor for 27 years. He served in the Air Force Quarter Master Corps during World War II.
He was a charter member of the Batavia Society of Artists where he exhibited his work and won numerous awards.
He was an avid birdwatcher and expert in flowers, shrubs and trees. He enjoyed fox hunting and raising foxhounds.
He began painting in the mid 1930s and continued his hobby until the mid 1980s. His interest in the outdoors can be seen in the watercolors and oils he painted.
He trained and painted with Roy Mason. Mason's influence can be seen in many of his landscapes.
Mr. Mahaney passed away in Batavia on December 30, 1995.
