Dr. Wilder, a retired surgeon originally from Maine, does not have any formal training. He began "fooling around" with painting on the advice of his wife in 1993.

He took a six-week course with Liz Frost, and has painted with John Hodgins and Don Grieger. He practiced and practiced his painting to hone his skills.
