Hamlet of Lime Rock
Three miles east of village of LeRoy
Lime Rock is located three miles east of the village of LeRoy on Route 5. In 1815, Harry Holmes opened the first stone quarry in Lime Rock. Holmes also established two limekilns where the stone was burned to extract the lime content.
Lime Rock was a thriving community with all the services one could expect. There were schools, churches, blacksmith shops, and many other businesses.
During the later part of the 1800s, many Italian immigrants
moved there to work in the quarries. For this growing segment of the population,
St. Anthony’s Church was built in 1909.
