North Bergen: A post office was established in 1820. This small community was a bustling four-corners before the first half of the 19th century was over. There was a church, two general stores, three blacksmith shops, one ashery, two wagon shops, two shoe shops, one drugstore, one justice office, a two-story furniture shop where Mr. Gooding built custom-made furniture and a stave mill. The tavern, usually full, catered mostly to the travelers going west in their covered wagons.
By 1890, there was one store, a post office, two manufactories, and about 150 residents. In 1912, there were two schoolhouses; No. 1 on the North Bergen Road and No. 4 on the corner of Creamery Road and West Bergen Road. James Aradine had a blacksmith shop, Charles T. Phelps a general store and Burton Sands a sawmill.
Galusha Anderson, who was born in North Bergen in 1832, wrote
a book, “When Neighbors Were Neighbors,” in the early 20th century
about the life and people of North Bergen. He was a descendent of early settlers.
