Village of Oakfield

Route 63 & Route 262

Oakfield Village was originally called Plain Brook then Caryville in honor of the founder of the Cary Collegiate Institute, Col. Alfred Cary. The name was changed to Oakfield when the village was incorporated on July 10, 1858. It was probably named Oakfield because of the large number of oak trees is the area. At the time of incorporation, the village population was 1,511.

Sidewalks were installed in 1861 and the following year a fire truck was acquired, although there was not a fire company until 1895.

In the 1880s a bank was established, a chief of police appointed, and streetlights were installed.

During the 1880s, three fires destroyed the business district. Because of the fires, a local law was passed forbidding the construction of wooden buildings between Water Street and Maple Avenue.
