Hamlet of South Alabama
Judge Rd & Maple St

South Alabama was first known as Smithville. It is located at the crossroads of Judge Road and Maple Street and was first settled before 1820. Throughout the history of the community, there were many stores there, the first being owned by the Smith family. It is believed this is the origin of the name Smithville.
A post office opened in 1850 and service continued out of the South Alabama Post Office until 1904 when mail began to be delivered out of the Oakfield Post Office.
The bustling community had a doctor, wagon shop, and a tannery. Perry Wight Sr. manufactured dulcimers.
